The Allusive HR Couch

Weighing in at about 100 pounds, white, and costing no more than $200, the HR couch doesn’t appear to be anything spectacular, however this unspectacular looking couch has made itself numerous friends in its life at Infusion. It has the magical ability to draw people to it, to sit, to chat, to discuss worries and accomplishments.

But what is the magnetic appeal that draws employees to the couch? Well, I was curious myself, so I started to ask these couch-sitters to find out more.

“It’s a safe place in the office. Somewhere you can go to just let loose for a minute, but you're with HR so you don't feel like you're slacking. It is a welcome pause in the day. And anything goes. you can chat about work, life, or anything in the world. The couch is safe, like home base in tag!”

Justin Kogler

“I visit the couch to chat up the HR girls and steal their chocolates”

Asad Munshi

“The HR couch is like the medulla oblongata of Infusion Toronto.  It’s essentially the cardiac center of this office.  When things are tense the couch is hard at work ensuring everything returns to a steady stable state via the relaxed atmosphere it creates.  Long live the HR couch.”

Matt Garrett

“Ahh, the couch, my tiny bed with no rent perfect for those of us who are Sleepless in Toronto.”

Robert Luong

“It is the only place I can legitimately lie down and people will not look at my funny, and even then, some people still look at me funny.”

Jeanette Trac

But there is always one bad apple…

“The HR couch?  I hate the HR couch.  You think you’re being invited in to sit and maybe sneak in a snack...instead you are integrated, and you better hope your Pro-D forms have been submitted.  To be perfectly honest, some of the worst moments in my life have occurred on that couch.”

Maxim Markaroff

No matter what the reason, the couch is there for whoever needs it, although, Andrea and I both agree, if we keep growing at this rate, we are going to need a bigger couch! – You never know when we will need to use it as a corporate apartment. (Just ask Robert) ;p

Anatomy of Sharepoint Pages
One of our own Infusionites is doing a SharePoint speech this Tuesday at 6:30PM at VersaTrans Solutions, Latham, NY. Details are below, hope to see you all there!

An Anatomy of SharePoint Pages

Speaker: Russ Kehoe, Senior Consultant, Infusion

Windows SharePoint Services (WSS) and Microsoft Office SharePoint Server (MOSS) make it easy for IT departments to implement dependable, scalable collaboration infrastructures with minimal administrative time and effort. Leveraging ASP.Net 2.0 technology, SharePoint is a relatively painless transition point for most web developers.

Join us as Russ Kehoe, Senior Consultant and Infusion, provides us with an overview on developing sites using SharePoint technologies. Russ will cover a bit of what SharePoint is and how pages work in both WSS and MOSS.  Russ will also present a CodePlex project that significantly enhances the ability to develop custom pages.  We'll also cover some coding tips for SharePoint.

Bio:
Russ Kehoe is a Senior Consultant for Infusion Development, a Microsoft partner with offices in Toronto, New York, Boston, and Abu Dhabi. Russ has been developing software in the capital district area for 19 years. You can email him at themidnightcoder@hotmail.com.

Infusion goes to the Superbowl

About three weeks ago, Infusion was asked to produce a demo of a security application for managing security at SuperBowl XLIII in Tampa Bay this Sunday.  Although originally intended as a demo to gain some press for both Infusion and E-Sponder (the solution that Tampa Police uses in their day to day operations), it was such a hit, that the Incident Commander requested that it be brought into the Joint Operation Center, where every security organization from the local police to the CIA were gathered to monitor the event.  The app allowed for real time visualization of incidents as they were reported to 911 and filed by police officers.

There were film crews from NBC and CBS filming the Incident Commander using the application.

Big shout out to Lan Nguyen, for his help with developing the application, and to Alex Preston and Trevor Hunter for their guidance during the architecture and design phase.

Staying involved in the Tech Community

As part of our philosophy to continually improve our knowledge and to grow those around us, Infusion has continued to stay involved in the tech community.

Last night, Kartik Subramani represented Infusion as the guest speaker at Toronto’s .Net User Group. He gave a comprehensive speech about Surface Technology, including various demonstrations of applications and a complete outline of the components involved in designing a Surface application. He was graciously received by 80 members of this technology group.

For more information on Infusion’s Surface applications, watch this new video,

Chris Ching is also an organizer for the Toronto Silverlight User group, and has been a speaker there in the past. For more information on the Toronto Silverlight User group, please visit, www.torontosilverlight.com (please note:  you may require silverlight to view this website)

All in a Day’s Work

Think the office is all heads down, locked at your cubicle? Not here! We work hard but can have fun doing it. For the holidays we participated in an adopt-a-family program with the objective of fulfilling our family’s wish list.  It was a challenge to raise the money but in true Infusion style we succeeded!  All for a good cause and a good time, we raised $473! Enough to get everything our family needed.

We started off by playing BINGO in the office one afternoon and got donations through employees buying the bingo cards to play. The numbers were called out via email to keep things interesting and the winner got a gift card donated by Infusion.

Our big money maker was a raffle to throw a pie into a mangers face! Tyler Davey (one of our Practice Managers) volunteered to be the target and our excited employees came at lunch to watch the spectacle.  One of the MapPoint developers won and in a flurry of laughter, whip cream and pie bits he got Tyler straight on.

Check out some of the pics below from the contest!

Infusion Cares

Infusion culture is something I try to explain to potential hires on a daily basis, but nothing demonstrates an Infusion employee’s compassion more than some of the examples I have witnessed in the past month. On Oct 23rd, 9 Infusionites donated time, money and climbed the 144 flights of stairs in the CN Tower to help raise funds for the United Way.

Greg Roderick, Andrea Richardson, Richard Brundritt, Dan Levine, Mike Spendlove, Trevor Hunter, Devin Bialo, Ernie Taylor and Jeremy Bibby raised $1,200 in donations which will work to helping out those in need in our community.

Another example of this compassion is the Infusion Blood Drive on November 26th.  After learning that Canada’s blood reserves are at a all time low, Rohit Gosain suggested that Infusion employees step up to donate. His request was answered by 16 employees in a manner of minutes all excited about the idea to help this cause.

On August, Infusion employees pooled together $2,385 to donate to Breakfast for learning. Yet another example of the things Infusion employees can achieve when they work together.

This kind of Infusion compassion and caring for others is shown not just through charity events but in everyday activities. It is what makes us a team and is a fundamental part of the Infusion culture.
