BizTalk 2k6 and Sql 2k5. Right idea, wrong version

Earlier, I posted about how I couldn't get BizTalk 2k6 and SQL Server 2k5 to interact.  I have received confirmation from one of my infusion co-workers that this is indeed the case, that he couldn't get the June CTP (the one compatible with VS.NET 2k5 Beta 2) to work with BizTalk.  So for now, the full SQL Server 2k5 install just doesn't get along with BizTalk2k6.

However, not at all is lost.  I also did some tinkering and found that although BizTalk will not work with the normal version of SQL 2k5, I did get BizTalk to work with SQL 2k5 Express, which ships with VS.NET.  So it's feasible to get some SQL 2k5 action with BizTalk.  However since SQL Express is not very desirable, you might want to still go with the standard Sql 2k sp3a install.

Hopefully this will be resolved before the BizTalk 2k6 actual RTM.  Until then, if you are desperate to use SQL 2k5, use SQL 2k5 Express.

Now serving: Office 12

As I mentioned before, I was out at the Office 12 TAP in early August.  What I saw was pretty hip, but the only unfortunate thing was that it was all under NDA.  I received the alpha bits back in mid August, and have been tinkering with them ever since.

But now that the PDC has happened, it's all out in the open.  So, let the blogging begin.

If you're really interested in the new version of Office, you should check out channel9.msdn.com.  It's got a lot of videos pertaining to the new features and functionality.

My personal favorite so far is the announcement of blogs and wikis in the new version of SharePoint (WSS 3.0).  Check out the video here.  I've been saying for a while, what SharePoint needs is more wiki functionality, like the ability to edit text on a page without having to go through the whole process of adding another web part, changing it's properties, etc.  And now it's in, so pretty hip.

This post is pretty light on the content, but I'll be sure to be posting some Office 12 related posts soon.

BizTalk 2k6 and Sql2k5: not so good

So the Chief tells me that we need to get on BizTalk 2k6 for our internal use and to start migrating our client demos.  As I previously reported before, LCS works perfectly fine with Sql2k5, so I thought I would use Sql2k5 for my BizTalk box.

Big mistake.

Unfortuantely, I couldn't get BizTalk to work with the Sql 2k5 CTP release (the one that ships with VS.NET 2k5 - which is required for BizTalk 2k6).  Install proper completed normally, but configuration kept failing.  I tried various configuration settings, but Enterprise Single Sign On kept failing, and consequently the BizTalk Runtime Engine kept failing.  All of the other components managed to configure correctly, which struck me as odd, because I know that they also add databases to SQL Server.

I tried to install about four times unsucessfully (which wasn't that time consuming since I was using VPC w/ undo disks).  After the last time, I broke down and installed Sql 2000 sp3a, and with the same configuration settings, it worked.  Nothing was different except the version of Sql Server.

It says in the BizTalk documentation that it requires Sql2k, but it also mentions later some things about installing it with Yukon (Sql 2k5).  It's pretty unclear about whether it's supported or not, so I'm here to post that I don't think that BizTalk 2k6 works with the Sql 2k5 CTP release.

If anyone has gotten it to work, please let me know.
